Check Your Ducting This Season for Better Performance & a Warmer, Drier Home
Why Ducting Condition Matters
Ducting condition is critical for the performance of your ventilation, air conditioning, and extraction systems. Poorly maintained ducting reduces airflow, increases running costs, and puts unnecessary wear on your equipment.
Signs It's Time to Replace Your Ducting
If your ducting has lost its sheen and presents a dull, matte look, it's time to replace it. Also check for:
- Holes or damage from rodents
- Joins that have come apart
- Visible sagging or kinking
Best practice is to use duct joiners to connect sections for a good airtight fit and uninterrupted airflow.
Nude (Uninsulated) Ducting — Ventilation Systems
Nude ducting is most common for home ventilation systems where temperature is less of a concern. The primary goal is managing moisture with as many dry air changes as possible.
- Smartvent, Supervent, DVS, and Moisture Master systems use 200mm ducting
- HRV systems use 150mm ducting

Insulated Ducting — Air Conditioning & Heat Transfer
Air conditioning and heat transfer systems require insulated ducting because temperature management (heating and cooling) is the primary concern. Uninsulated joins can cause significant temperature drops, reducing efficiency and increasing running costs.
Always pull the insulation over the join and secure with a duct joiner to maintain an airtight, thermally efficient connection.
Clip Lock Ducting — Wet Areas
Wet areas such as bathrooms and laundries require clip lock ducting. Unlike standard glued flexible ducts, the mechanical clip-lock construction does not delaminate or fail under continuous high humidity.
Clip lock ducting also comes in an insulated variant, commonly found on Smartvent installations.
