DIY Heat Pump Cleaning Guide for Autumn

February 10, 2026 / Super Cell / 0 comments

Keep Your Heat Pump Running Efficiently This Autumn

As autumn arrives and temperatures begin to drop, it's the perfect time to prepare your heat pump for the cooler months ahead. Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance, better air quality, and lower energy costs throughout winter.

Why Clean Your Heat Pump in Autumn?

Autumn is ideal for heat pump maintenance because:

  • Summer dust and pollen have accumulated in the filters
  • You're transitioning from cooling to heating mode
  • It prepares your system for heavy winter use
  • Clean filters improve indoor air quality and energy efficiency

What You'll Need

  • soft bristle brush
  • Supercell DIY heat pump cleaner
  • Step ladder (for high-mounted units)

Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide

1. Turn Off the Unit

Always switch off your heat pump at the wall before cleaning to ensure safety.

2. Remove and Clean the Filters

Open the front panel and carefully remove the filters. Vacuum or brush off loose dust and debris, then apply Supercell heat pump air conditioning cleaner. then run on cooling or fan mode only for 15 to 30 mins  (never heating) before reinstalling.

3. Clean the Unit Exterior

Spray with Supercell heat pump air conditioner cleaner Wipe down the exterior casing with a damp cloth to remove dust and fingerprints.

4. Check the Outdoor Unit

Remove any leaves, debris, or obstructions around the outdoor condenser unit. Ensure there's adequate clearance for airflow.

Apply Supercell coil cleaner degreaser to the coil & wash through with hose. (always spray down into coil never up into coil.

5. Inspect and Replace if Necessary

Spray & brush through Supercell Heat pump air conditioner cleaner on filters & remove all muck food fats bacteria then rinse off, replace wet or dry does not matter system runs at peak efficiency.

Tip.. rinse the dirt out the way it came in so rinse coil side to intake side for better results.

How Often Should You Clean?

For optimal performance:

  • Clean filters monthly during heavy use periods
  • Deep clean at the start of each season

Professional Maintenance

While DIY cleaning handles day-to-day maintenance, consider professional servicing annually to check refrigerant levels, electrical connections, and overall system health.
